Tere Naam (Hindi: तेरे नाम, Urdu: تیرے نام‎, In your name) is a 2003 Bollywood musical romantic drama film. It is directed by Satish Kaushik and written by Bala and Jainendra Jain, starring Salman Khan and Bhoomika Chawla in her Hindi film debut.[2] The film is a remake of Bala's own directional venture, Tamil film Sethu (1999).[3]

The film is supposedly based on a true story as the DVD cover says "Unfortunately a true love story", though during the end credits a fictitious disclaimer is shown.[4] Before the release of the film media speculated the film was based on Khan's real life relationship with actress Aishwarya Rai.[4][5]

Tere Naam was released on 15 August 2003 and was a major success at the box office.[1] Salman was highly praised for his portrayal of Radhe Mohan and the role is widely considered to be his finest performance till date.[6][7] Tere Naam was nominated for a total of 24 Awards, winning 7 of them, including 8 Filmfare Award nominations.[8] In 2011 Kaushik announced a sequel to Tere Naam, thus he is currently working on the script.[9]

Plot

Radhe Mohan (Salman Khan), a rowdy ex-college boy who, after a ragging (hazing) session, loses his heart to first year student Nirjara (Bhoomika Chawla), a traditional Brahmin girl. After several failed attempts to convince Nirjara, Nirjara considers Radhe a stalker. In a chain of events, Nirjara comes to know Radhe's goodness. Just when Nirjara reciprocates his love, Radhe is attacked by a gang of thugs, loses his mind and is admitted to an ashram where, it is hoped, that the more traditional means of treatment could have a therapeutic effect on him. He comes back to sanity but still is not able to come back even after several attempts.

Eventually he returns to his proper senses, and then, rushes back to Nirjara's house, only to find that she has committed suicide, because her family was forcing her to marry Rameshwara (Ravi Kishan). After accepting this fact as his fate, he returns to the ashram in spite of his family and friends who are there for him. He does not tell them that he is back to normal and goes back to ashram. In the end , he is shown as working for curing other mental patients while dedicating his whole life in the name of Nirjara.

Casting

The film was offered to Amisha Patel to play the lead role of Nirjara opposite to Salman Khan. Due to date problem actress refused the film, and then which went out to Bhumika Chawla who made her debut in Bollywood.
Reception

Tere Naam garnered overwhelmingly buoyant reviews. Subhash K Jha of Times of India waxed lyrical about Salman claiming that the actor had outshone even Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. " Obsessive unrequited love has been done by many actors in the past from Dilip Kumar in Mehboob Khan's Andaz to Amitabh Bacchan in Parwana to Shah Rukh Khan in Anjaam. But none has done it with such stunning physical and emotional aggression. Salman takes over the show with gut-wrenching and finally devastating impact."[10]
Box office

Tere Naam opened to packed houses.[11] The response to Tere Naam surpassed that of Gadar Ek Prem Katha, Lagaan, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon and Koi... Mil Gaya. Jodhpur saw almost a dozen people donning Salman's Tere Naam hairstyle for the first day's show. And this was the place where Salman Khan had received the maximum flak after his black buck case.

Komal Nahta reported in Film Information that the collections at Meerut's Nandan cinema have broken records over the last five years. Two hours after the advanced booking counter for the film opened for the first time, the theatre sold Rs 3 lakh (Rs 300,000) worth of tickets.[12]

Taran Adarsh told [Times of India] that the advance booking for Tere Naam is the best ever in five years. In the north, 'record-breaking' is the term being bandied about.[13]

The film altogether grossed INR1240 million (US$20 million)[1] and was Semi Hit at the box office.[14] It was the third highest grossing movie of the year.[15]
